10 Website Features Your Customers Actually Want in 2026

Most advice on “what your website needs” comes from agencies guessing, or from lists written to pad out a sales page. This one doesn’t. Every item below comes from a named, real survey of actual website visitors and small business owners (Clutch, BrightLocal, Leadferno, PowerReviews and Google’s own research), not our opinion of what looks good.

Quick answer

Across the research, the same handful of things keep coming up: a site has to load fast on a phone, be easy to navigate, show clear prices and contact details, carry real reviews, and actually be findable on Google. Most small business websites do two or three of these well, rarely all ten. The list below goes through each one, with the evidence behind it.

The 10 features website visitors actually expect

1

A site that’s fast on a phone, not just a desktop

Mobile users are 5× more likely to leave immediately on a slow or clunky mobile site, and 53% abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. (Think with Google) See our WordPress speed service →

This is the one we can show, not just claim: our WordPress Speed page links to live, real-time PageSpeed results for our own site and for real clients including Hedgeworx, run fresh each time you click.

2

Navigation that doesn’t make them think

In a survey of people who visit at least five sites a day, 94% rated easy navigation as the top factor in whether they stay on a site, ahead of design or content. (Clutch) See our web design service →
3

Clear services and pricing, not “get in touch to find out”

A product/service list and a price list were the top-ranked content across every age group and gender in an 800-person consumer survey, ahead of photos, videos or social proof. (BrightLocal) See affordable web design for small businesses →
4

Contact details visitors don’t have to hunt for

Not showing a phone number was flagged as a major deterrent, and opening hours and address rated as critical, especially for visitors aged 55+. (BrightLocal) See how we handle this on our own site →
5

More than one way to get in touch

Phone still leads overall (45.5%), but under-35s lean toward text and chat: messaging channels combined now capture almost 1 in 4 contact preferences. (Leadferno, 1,000-person survey) See how your CMS controls this →
6

Real reviews, not just claims

99.9% of online shoppers read reviews before buying, and half trust them as much as a personal recommendation from a friend. (PowerReviews / BrightLocal) See our conversion rate service →
7

A design that looks like today, not 2016

83% rate an attractive, current design as important to whether they trust a business, and 91% want clear product visuals and descriptions. (Clutch) See our web design service →
8

Booking or paying without picking up the phone

82% of consumers prefer booking online to calling, and 48% have switched providers after a poor booking experience. (GetApp / Zendesk) See our ecommerce web design service →

Real example: our ecommerce build for Goodnature Traps runs orders and payment without a phone call in the loop; the same approach works for taking deposits or bookings on a service-based site.

9

Security that’s invisible: until it isn’t

In our own review of small business owners’ priorities, 34% are actively investing in security updates, usually after a scare, not before one. (Clutch, 2025) See our CMS & security service →
10

Content that actually answers what they searched

Small business owners rank SEO as their #1 source of leads (40%), four times ahead of social media (10%), and visitors won’t return to a site with irrelevant content. (Clutch) See our WordPress SEO services →

A gap worth knowing about

When a business owner comes to us wanting a new website, the brief is usually about how it looks. When we look at what actually gets their customers to enquire, it’s rarely the same list.

What we’re usually asked for

  • A full redesign or visual refresh
  • Social media links and feeds
  • “Make it look more modern”

What their visitors are actually judging

  • Can I find the price and phone number in 5 seconds?
  • Does it load properly on my phone?
  • Do other people trust this business?

You’ve just read the ten things visitors say they judge a website on. Most of the sites we’re asked to redesign were built to look right in a meeting, not checked against a list like this one. If you’d like an honest, no-obligation read on where yours stands, that’s exactly what our consultancy service is for.

Website features: quick answers

What features does a small business website actually need?

At minimum: a site that loads quickly on mobile, navigation visitors can follow without thinking, clearly stated services and prices, visible contact details with more than one way to get in touch, genuine reviews or trust signals, a current design, working security (SSL and up-to-date software), and content that’s actually written to answer what people are searching for. Most small business sites cover two or three of these well, rarely all of them together.

Is a mobile-friendly website really that important?

Yes: it’s one of the biggest single factors in whether a visitor stays or leaves. Google’s own research found mobile users are five times more likely to leave immediately from a site that isn’t mobile-friendly, and over half abandon a page that takes more than three seconds to load.

Do I need reviews or testimonials on my own website, not just Google?

It helps. Visitors read reviews wherever they find them, but having genuine testimonials on your own site puts that trust signal right at the point they’re deciding whether to contact you, rather than relying on them going to check elsewhere first.

How much does it cost to add these features to an existing website?

It depends which of the ten are already covered and how your current site is built. Our pricing page sets out our current packages, or you can get in touch and we’ll tell you honestly which of these would move the needle most for your site specifically.

Can eco seo review my existing website against this list?

Yes: that’s exactly what our consultancy service is for: a straight, specific answer on where your site stands against what actually gets visitors to convert, not a generic audit template.
