OK firstly if you just got here thinking there really is a magic stick which is going to get you to the top, then think again. If you landed here for some other reason and need a laugh, check out this mash up video of Google’s Matt Cutts telling us how to make it to Number 1………
Well it made me [...]

Have You Completed the Microsoft and Yahoo Search Alliance Survey?
No? Me neither!
Is it just me, or is asking everyone to complete a survey which “should take less than 20 minutes” pretty much guaranteeing that you don’t get accurate data?
The new Microsoft and Yahoo Alliance (I’m sure they will come up with a better name in time) keep pestering me to complete a survey for them:
“We will ask about your overall satisfaction with Yahoo! and Microsoft, and your satisfaction with several aspects of your relationship with both companies, including return on [...]

What’s a Silo?
Silos or siloing is a concept which has been around for many years, however unlike most web design or seo trends, this one seems to have remained pretty constant over time.
The principle in itself is amazingly simple, it’s all to do with keeping relevant sections of a website together, in much the same way you would in a library. So where you have your homepage with the menu leading off to the main sections of the site (2nd level pages), you could consider this walking into the library’s reception and seeing a sign by the lift, each floor covers a different [...]

My Policy on Comments on this Blog
Having had a bit of a glut of comments left here recently (albeit 99% spam which was caught by my filters anyway) I thought it was about time to spell it out, in plain and simple English, just on the remote off-chance that some are not being done by bot’s and that they actually read a post before commenting.
1. This blog adds the nofollow attribute to all comments, unless I manually activate your link.
2. I will only activate your link if your site is related but not competing with this site.
3. If you add your name as keywords, it will not get past my [...]

Yes Google did Update SERP’s on Mayday
The SEO forums have recently been full of discussions about a recent update and numerous questions about “why have my search positions dropped?”. It seemed to centre around long tail keywords falling in the search results, for (usually) newer, smaller or less optimised websites, the general consensus was that it was just a Google dance and the rankings were likely to recover again soon as they often do while they are testing new algorithm changes, however as the days went by and they didn’t increase again, it became apparent that [...]

A few years ago, one of my suppliers wanted to show me how some software worked, he was about 200 miles away and the software itself had a low price tag, so he suggested an online demonstration. I could see his screen from my desktop and we spoke over the phone, as it turned out the product in question wasn’t really that good, however the online meeting software was!
Ever since then I have been using software to deliver online presentations/webinars and conduct meetings. Why? Because it saves me a small fortune in petrol and time. If I had to drive to Manchester for a 2 hour meeting [...]
